Discovering the Invisible Zipper Foot

Discovering the Invisible Zipper Foot

I’ve always loved using an invisible zipper when creating dresses and skirts. The insertion of one of these zippers makes a finished garment look and feel instantly professional. It is definitely one of my favourite sewing accessories!

Learning About The Invisible Zipper Foot

I used to insert invisible zippers using my standard zipper foot and sewing as close to the teeth as possible. Something I will never have to do this again! I mentioned in one of my previous posts about one of my favourite sewing accessories – the invisible zipper foot! A fellow Australian Sewing Guild member suggested it after watching me painstakingly trying to insert one using my previous technique. I’ve tried a couple of different ones but ended up favouring the Birch Invisible Zipper Foot. I’ve found that it gives me the best, easiest and flawless results.

How Does It Work?

The packet that the foot comes in has one roller foot and four attachments to suit different machines. The foot then simply replaces your current foot as I’ve shown in the image for this post. Firstly, line your needle up with the middle of the foot. You then roll the teeth just over so you can then get the needle in right along the edge. It does take some practice to get the hang of it without sewing into the zipper teeth, but once you do the results are great! I’ve found that if any rogue stitches do make it into the teeth it will make the zipper impossible to use. These can easily be unpicked (oh, the joys of unpicking!) and then sewn again with a bit of back and forth just at that particular spot with seamless results.

I purchased my at my local sewing supply store, you can check out how they come in the packet at birchcreative.com.au
